How Gaming Together Can Build Studio Culture

  • Team

Playing games together is a worthwhile, meaningful pursuit.

This is a core tenet of Singularity 6's culture, and one of the ways it manifests is in our weekly gaming hour. Every Wednesday, at 6 PM, all S6 employees are invited to come together to play multiplayer games. Everyone is free to play any game they like - some play board games like Race for the Galaxy, Root, or Riichi Mahjong - others play action games like Overwatch, Among Us, or Deep Rock Galactic.

Gaming hour is great for letting people interact with co-workers they might not work with regularly

Discord is great for coordinating game nights, as well as sharing plenty of pictures of professional model and goodest of boys, Mochi.

Gaming hour is our opportunity to relax and unwind, but it's also an opportunity to interact and connect with our coworkers outside of typical work functions. You can get to know a person by playing together, be it overcoming game obstacles or engaging in friendly competition. Gaming hour is great for letting people interact with co-workers they might not work with regularly, letting them get to know people outside of their immediate team. It’s also an opportunity to discover games we might not otherwise have tried, and expands our knowledge of the gaming world while having fun.

Given the current pandemic that has us all working from home, having activities that bring us together gives us opportunities to interact. Gaming hour gives people a reason to get into voice chat and socialize on a regular basis. Since gaming hour is an official company event, people can participate without feeling guilty for taking time away from work - it’s part of our schedule because we believe that playing games together is a worthwhile, meaningful pursuit.
